Flood killed 54, destroyed 30,356 houses — Kano government

The Kano State Emergency Management Agency has said that 54 persons lost their lives while 30,356 houses were destroyed due to flooding during the ongoing 2020 raining season between June and now.

The KASEMA Executive Secretary, Dr Saleh Jili, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Kano, noting that the data cut across the 44 local government areas of the state.

Jili listed the affected LGAs as Rogo; Kabo, Gezawa, Bebeji, Kura, Gwarzo, Shanono, Wudil and Gaya.

Others were Danbatta; Bagwai, Rimin Gado, Ungogo, Gwale, Warawa, Tarauani, Nasarawa, Dala, Kumbotso, and Kano Municipal, among others.

He said, “30,356 houses were destroyed and 54 persons lost their lives. Also, 81 persons were injured from the floods and windstorm in June to date.

“The agency has recorded 2,177 fire outbreaks and 9,127 farmlands destroyed in the disaster. We were at the affected areas to sympathise with the victims and we distributed relief materials to alleviate their sufferings.”

Jili said the items distributed included bags of cement, grains, roofing sheets, blankets, mattresses, and toiletries, among others. NAN
