I competed in 5 pageants before winning ‘Nigerian Queen’ –Chikaodili Nna-Udosen

To say that model, Chikaodili Nna-Udosen, was shocked when she was declared the winner of the ‘Nigerian Queen’ beauty pageant recently, may well be an understatement.

In an interview with Sunday Scoop, the 26-year-old native of Akwa-Ibom State noted that it felt surreal when she was announced the winner.

“As much as I knew I had worked hard enough to deserve the crown, it still felt unbelievable and surreal when the host, Bovi, announced me as the winner. If I am to borrow a few words from Fireboy DML, I would say that ‘Laughter, tears and goosebumps’ best describe how I felt at that particular moment.”

On why she decided to be part of the pageant, Udosen said, “I entered this pageant so I could justify the self-assertion that I could compete at the highest level and still be productive. Before winning this particular pageant, I had contested in five different pageants. I could easily have given up but I am happy I didn’t. I believe this is my time.”

Reacting to the assertion that beauty queens are not usually intellectually sound, the graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, said, “I vehemently disagree with the notion that beauty queens are just beautiful and not intellectually sound. For the ‘Nigerian Queen’, the motto is ‘Beauty with a Purpose’. Beauty is one of the characteristics required but it goes beyond that. This is because more important than a crown on a queen’s head is a crown on her heart.”

Sharing her plans for the future, Udosen said she intended to be the first African to win the Miss Grand International crown. She added, “I intend to focus on being the first African to bring home the international crown. Also, I am an environmentalist and have always been a crusader for combating the effects of climate change. However, the ‘Nigerian Queen’ platform would give me a wider reach to spread this awareness.” Punch
