Tokyo 2020: Evelyn Akhator wants early training for D’Tigress

D’Tigress forward Evelyn Akhator has admitted that D’Tigress face a daunting task qualifying from Group B after they discovered their Tokyo 2020 group stage opponents on Tuesday, The PUNCH reports.

The Olympic Games will be held between July 23 and August 8, 2021, after its initial postponement due to COVID-19 pandemic.

D’Tigress were drawn against the host nation, Japan, champions USA and France and Akhator, who plays for Flammes Carolo in France, believes quality preparation will help the African champions perform well in Tokyo.

“For me it’s all about how well we prepare for the Games,” Akhator told The PUNCH.

“Our group is the toughest, you know having USA, having France and the host country Japan in our group, I will say it’s really going to be interesting games.

“They are games that cannot be ignored especially having Nigeria in the group. People love watching us now, coming from scratch all the way down up. But we just have to prepare, get ready and see what happens.

“Our group opponents are also wary of us just as we are about them. They all saw how we played last February, but we need to be confident ahead of the Games because it will be about the team who wants it more on the court.

“The French team are good individually but we must focus on ourselves and work on our mindset.”

D’Tigress captain Adaora Elonu also said, “I can’t wait to compete against them (group opponents). I’m so excited as well as the other players and we cannot wait to compete at the Olympics. I think they put us in a group that we have to compete against the best. Everyone here is really excited and focused.” Punch
