Traditional rulers will remain neutral in politics - Sultan

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared that traditional rulers would constantly maintain neutrality in the nation’s political affairs.

According to him, the rulers would rather resist attempt to be dragged into any political mud for whatever interest.

Sultan, who spoke, yesterday, at the opening session of the 12th General Assembly of National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria holding in Kano, stressed that traditional institutions in Nigeria were more interested in political stability and unity of the country.

Sa’ad, who was optimistic that the country will soon overcome its security challenges, said that the notion against insecurity in Nigeria was exaggerated.
“Let me assure the nation that the role of the traditional rulers in Nigeria is to promote peace and unity. We are not and should not be seen as melting in politics.

“ We would rather remain neutral in the scheme of politics and continue to advise our leaders to do the right thing. Nobody should even attempt to drag us into politics because it is not our calling. We have resolved to continue to pray for the political leaders for God to guide them right,” Sultan said.

Governor Abdullah Umar Ganduje, who declared the assembly open, charged the monarchs to work for unity and peace that Nigeria urgently requires.

Ganduje, who noted that the 12th council came at a time when the nation is facing security challenge, urged the institution to focus more on how to cement national integration.

To him, Kano remains one of the peaceful states in the country because of huge investment on security architecture. Theguardianng
