Igbo youths ask promoters of Tinubu to keep off South East

Igbo youths, under the auspices of the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), yesterday, warned groups and individuals promoting the presidential ambition of Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to steer clear of the zone.

President and Publicity Secretary of the group, Goodluck Ibem and Okay Nworu, respectively, in a statement, described, as unfortunate, how certain persons from Igbo land would allow themselves to be used to promote the ambition of “a man, who is outdated in all ramifications in the scheme of things, to be voted as a Nigeria’s president in 2023.”

They added that in one of Tinubu’s outings in Ekiti State, he openly boasted that he made President Muhammadu Buhari president in 2015, stressing that his statement meant that he brought upon Nigerians the hardship they are facing now.

“Everything in the market has increased by over 1,000 per cent, and the same person, who brought this misery on Nigerians, wants to be President. We will not allow such to happen,” they said.

MEANWHILE, the Tinubu presidential support groups in Enugu State have resolved to come together under a new name, ‘Tinubu-Shettima Independent Campaign Group,’ for the purpose of canvassing votes and electing candidates of APC in the 2023 general elections.

The campaign support group accused factional state Chairman of the party, Ugochukwu Agballah, of working for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, to undermine Tinubu and Shettima in the elections.

Addressing reporters after their inaugural meeting attended by leaders of the campaign groups from the 17 local councils of the state, a member of Tinubu’s campaign council and former state chairman of the party, Ben Nwoye, stated that there is no going back in the move to retain power by the APC at the centre.

“We have resolved with all members of the support groups in Enugu and all the 17 local councils to merge all Tinubu support groups to Tinubu-Shetima Independent Campaign Group, Enugu chapter. We resolved to support candidates of our party, APC, from House of Assembly to the presidency, and we shall campaign for them to win the coming elections,” he stated.

160 million Nigerians risk yellow fever - WHO

The World Health Organisation has said that 160 million Nigerians are at risk of yellow fever.

The WHO said with Nigeria’s population of about 200 million, the figure makes up around 25 per cent of all the people at risk in Africa.

The organisation revealed this in an article publishd on its website. The article is on new films show on the impact of yellow fever outbreaks in Taraba State, and the global efforts to eliminate yellow fever epidemics by 2026.

WHO said, “Nigeria’s population is around 200 million people, with 160 million people at risk of yellow fever. This makes up around 25 per cent of all the people at risk in Africa.”

Yellow fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes.

The “yellow” in the name refers to the jaundice that affects some patients. Symptoms of yellow fever include fever, headache, jaundice, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.

The Medical Officer, WHO Nigeria, Dr. Anne Baptiste, was quotd as saying, “Yellow fever is dangerous because a small percentage of patients will go through a more toxic phase of the disease.

“By then, they will experience fever, have system failure, mainly in the kidney and liver. They may experience bleeding coming from the mouth, nose and eyes and within seven to 10 days, half of them will die.”

The WHO also said Nigeria is at risk of both urban and sylvatic (jungle) exposure to the disease.

Sylvatic exposure is the transmission of yellow fever from mosquitoes that have bitten animals and non-human primates. Workers in mining and agriculture are particularly vulnerable to this type of transmission.   In 2017, there was resurgence in yellow fever in Nigeria after 15 years.

The global health body, however, said Nigeria has vaccinated over 45 million people against yellow fever during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, was also quoted as saying that government has strengthened surveillance for the disease.

He said, “We have reference laboratories in the country that have been strengthened, and are being supported and assessed to make sure they are meeting all the performance parameters in terms of sample collection and referral to our reference labs in Abuja.

“Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we have given out over 66 million doses in 2020 and 2021 to protect people from yellow fever outbreaks.

“This achievement has been possible through routine immunisation, as well as mass vaccination campaigns that identify gaps in the population and proactively target vulnerable communities.”

The PUNCH reports that Nigeria has recorded no fewer than 1,005 suspected yellow fever cases so far in 2022.

The cases were reported from 36 states including the FCT in 390 Local Government Areas. Punchng

Transfer: Absolutely embarrassing for Man United – Neville speaks De Jong’s Chelsea move

Manchester United legend, Gary Neville, has said that while failing to sign Frenkie de Jong would be ‘embarrassing’ for the Red Devils, it would be absolutely ‘horrific’ if the Dutch star ended up moving to Chelsea.

De Jong has been Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag’s top transfer target all summer, with the Red Devils desperate to unite the player with his former boss at Ajax.

Manchester United and Barcelona were reported to have reached an agreement at one point but the Netherlands international refused to move to Old Trafford.

However, recent reports indicate that De Jong could well be on his way to Chelsea and the two clubs are said to have agreed a fee of £67.5million for the player on Wednesday.

Nevile has lamented the development, saying it may be too much bad news for United fans to handle.

“If they [United] don’t get him [De Jong], it’s embarrassing but if he goes to Chelsea, it’s horrific,” he told Football Daily.

“If he doesn’t want to come, the deal would have been switched off a few weeks ago. Because of the relationship the player has with the manager, there must be some communication between them that’s saying, ‘wait for me I’m coming.” Dailypost

Terrorists release seven Kaduna train passengers, abduct five

Terrorists who attacked the Abuja-Kaduna bound train on March 28, 2022,   on Wednesday, released seven more hostages, including a family of six and a woman.

The identities of the family of six are the father, Abdubakar Garba; his wife, Maryam; and their 10-year-old son, Ibrahim; Fatima (7); Imran (5); and Zainab, who is one-and-a-half-year old.

Garba, who is a staff member of the National Assembly Service Commission, is the son of a former Military Administrator in Kano and Benue States.

Also released is a 60-year-old woman, Aisha Hassan, who was said to have been released due to life-threatening health challenges that deteriorated recently.

Although Tukur Mamu, publisher of Kaduna-based Desert Herald and media consultant to controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi,  confirmed the release of the seven hostages to journalists in Kaduna, he however, in a statement, said they were released following Gumi’s intervention.

The statement read in part, “Disturbed by the gory video images of four teenage children belonging to same family he saw in the last video released by the attackers of the AK9 Train, Gumi, for the first time since the abduction of the innocent passengers of that train over four months ago, reached out to the abductors through his media consultant, and sent Allah’s messages to them and consistently pleaded with them to consider the release of the poor children and their innocent parents.

“It was learnt that the health condition of two of the children has deteriorated since the flogging incident that affected their helpless father. A total of additional seven hostages were therefore released on Wednesday.

“The husband of the four kids is a staff member of the NASC. There was no intervention from the commission or NASS on his behalf since the travails began.

“This is to confirm to the world that due to Sheikh Gumi’s efforts and with the support of a serving Senator from the North, (a God-fearing personality that doesn’t have any relationship with the hostages) who chose to remain anonymous, the family of six has regained their freedom on Wednesday morning.

“Also released is a 60-year-old woman, one Hajia Aisha Hassan, who was said to have been released due to life-threatening health challenges that have deteriorated recently.”

The PUNCH, earlier reported that on March 28, 2022, terrorists planted explosives devices along the rail track and when the Abuja-Kaduna bound AK-9 passenger train approached the point, the device exploded, leading to the death of eight passengers. Punchng

Ivorian soldiers held for a month in Mali, negotiation favoured

Negotiations remain the preferred option to obtain the release of 49 Ivorian soldiers detained for a month in Bamako and accused by the military in power in Mali of being "mercenaries", which Abidjan denies, claiming that they were on a mission for the UN.

This case illustrates the tensions between Mali and Côte d'Ivoire, accused by Bamako of having incited its West African partners to tighten sanctions against the Malian military perpetrators of two coups since 2020, sanctions were finally lifted in early July.

A mediation by Togo has so far been unsuccessful, but discussions are continuing with a view to releasing the detained soldiers as quickly as possible. On 10 July, 49 Ivorian soldiers in military uniform, but unarmed, disembarked in Bamako from a plane of the national airline Air Côte d'Ivoire, another plane carrying their weapons. Africannews

Minimum wage: Strike continues - Enugu teachers

As the indefinite strike embarked upon by primary school teachers and local government workers in Enugu State enters the

third week, the chairman of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Theodore Odo, has said that unless

government pays the minimum wage to the teachers, the strike must continue.

Odo, in an interview with journalists in Enugu on Tuesday, said, “The strike is still on.  It will go on unless they pay

the minimum wage to the primary school teachers and the local government workers.”

“Primary school teachers and council workers in all the 17 local government areas have been on strike for about three

state started earning the enhanced salary.”

Irked by the inability of the local government chairmen and the state government, the NUT and the Nigeria Union of Local

Transfer: Man United’s decision to sign Cody Gakpo revealed as Gomez is set City move

Manchester United are now targeting PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.

The Red Devils are looking for more options in attack and have been linked with the likes of Marko Arnautovic.

talkSPORT’s Alex Crook said: “Another day and another name in the frame for a potential move to Old Trafford.

“Would you believe it is a player based in Holland? Cody Gakpo plays for PSV Eindhoven, managed by former Manchester

United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy.

“Basically, he is viewed as a cheaper alternative to Antony. Erik ten Hag wanted him from his old club Ajax, but that

isn’t moving forward at any great pace.

“Gakpo is another name in the frame and this would be more palatable to fans than Marko Arnautovic.”

Meanwhile, Manchester City are closing in on a deal for Sergio Gomez, according to transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano.

Pep Guardiola’s side are now discussing final details regarding the Anderlecht star’s move, with a deal said to be worth

in excess of €10million.

part of their first team squad. Dailypost
